History of women in Ukraine

The history of women in Ukraine is very long and rich. The first time that people settled in what is now called Ukraine was around 45,000 years ago. The most famous of them all is probably Anastasia who was a Russian princess that was killed with her family during the Russian revolution. 

Women in Ukraine have always had the same constitutional rights as men when it comes to the economic, political, cultural and social spheres. However, in practice, they have not always been treated equally.

One of the earliest examples of feminism in Ukraine was the Ukrainian Women's Union, which was founded in the 1920s. This organization was led by Milena Rudnytska, and was very active during the Soviet era. However, after Ukraine gained its independence in 1991, the feminist movement began to take root. Today, there are several active women's rights groups in Ukraine, including Feminist Ofenzyva and the Ukrainian Woman's Union. However, the most active group is FEMEN, which was officially closed in 2013. The leadership of this group left Ukraine because they feared for their lives and freedom.

Despite these challenges, women in Ukraine continue to make progress. In the 2019 parliamentary election, 87 women were elected to parliament, a record for Ukraine. This is a significant increase from the 2014 election, when only 12.1% of the parliament was made up of women. Women in Ukraine continue to face many challenges, but they are making progress. There are now more women in parliament, and women are being allowed to participate in combat roles in the military. With continued progress, women in Ukraine will eventually be treated equally and fairly.
