History of women in Australia

The history of women in Australia is a long and rich one. It's often overshadowed by the European settlement and the subsequent development of the country into a modern nation state. But there is much more to it than that. The earliest evidence of human habitation dates back some 50,000 years ago, when people first arrived on the continent via land bridges connecting to New Guinea and Tasmania. The first inhabitants were Aboriginal Australians, who have lived in Australia for at least 40,000 years before European settlement began in 1788.

Education Women are more likely to attend university than men are, with 57% of all students enrolled in tertiary education being female as of 2016. This is a significant increase from 2000 when only 46% were female and reflects an ongoing trend over recent decades for more females to attend university than males. The percentage of females graduating at bachelor level or above has also increased significantly since 2000 (from 44% to 54%). In contrast, male graduates have remained steady at around 55%. The number of females completing their undergraduate degree has increased by almost 10% since 2000 while male graduates have increased by less than 1%. Workforce In 2017 the Australian Bureau of Statistics reported that women made up 47% of the total workforce; a figure that has remained relatively stable over recent years. Women now make up 48% (up 2%) of senior management roles and 36% (up 3%) across middle management roles in ASX 200 companies compared to 31% (down 2%) and 28% (down 1%), respectively, in 2012.

Australia's population was estimated at 24 million people as at 30 June 2015, with women accounting for 51% (12 million) and men 49% (11 million). This represents an increase from 2011 where there were 11 million males and 11 million females living in Australia .
